Chubb is currently seeking a Commercial Surety Branch Manager to join our Surety Team in Chicago, IL.

Position Description:
The Commercial Surety Branch Manager is responsible in the development and fulfillment of goals established for profit, service, relationship management with producers, accounts, competitors and other Chubb departments. They will operate within the branch structure and help train other commercial surety team members. They are also responsible for working closely with the Simsbury Home Office in the dual underwriting process and making recommendations and decisions according to established parameters.
Additional Responsibilities include:
• Actively travel to effectively manage assigned territory in order to maintain existing relationships as well as develop new business relationships to achieve department and Commercial Surety Customer group goals.
• Review and monitor all assigned account Reports of Execution (ROE) and documentation to ensure compliance pricing and underwriting guidelines.
• Produce new business as well as underwrite existing business in accordance with established underwriting guidelines.
• Make prompt and decisive recommendations.
• Provide prompt, reliable service to both our external and internal customers.
• Maintain complete and well-documented account files.
• Travel territory frequently, visiting with producers and accounts, to generate new business activity.
• Work with all staff, including manager and assistant manager, to meet overall department and branch goals.
• Responsible to ensure timely collection of premium.

Competencies / Tech Skills:
• The candidate must possess 5+ years of surety underwriting experience.
• Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills required.
• Must work independently as well as part of an established team.
• Operate within the branch structure interacting with the home office, agency plant and customers.
• Drive the dual underwriting process by obtaining and analyzing pertinent underwriting information and then making well informed recommendations to home office.
• Must also demonstrate an ability to assist in the trainings and development of the less experienced team members.
• Strong organizational skills and overall business acumen required.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

Skills:

Job Requirements:
• Evaluates middle/small market business for coverage eligibility. Accepts, modifies or rejects risks based on a review of business in terms of loss experience and nature of risk in accordance with company/CSI guidelines and standards.
• Interprets policy contract language/forms and uses appropriate selection tools to determine eligibility, desirability and appropriate classification/pricing. Effectively communicates decisions and resolves agent/client concerns promptly.
• Maintains underwriting quality standards. Includes appropriate file documentation relating to final underwriting decision.
• Serves as point person for managing assigned local retail producer relationships. Collaboration with our Specialty Risk Center (SRC) in marketing to assigned agents within territory. Leads local marketing campaigns and provides local coordination for new product launches.
• Develops/maintains strong relationships and market presence with assigned producers and key accounts. Maintains effective communication and visibility through on-site visits, phone calls and email to gather and analyze necessary information critical to the underwriting process and to generate new business opportunities as well as manage policy renewal retention.
• Develops and executes on effective sales/marketing strategies to generate profitable growth for all new business lines. This includes driving alliances, cross-selling and cross-commercial opportunities, as appropriate.
• Identifies/directs complex business opportunities to SRC. Coordinates transfer of small, less complex business to the Underwriting Services Branch (USB) for renewal processing.
• Assists in educating producers on products, services, automation, and underwriting standards as well as sales and marketing techniques.
• Informs manager of coverage and/or product opportunities/weaknesses impacting growth potential. Gathers pertinent competitive information to assist in developing product development recommendations.
• Provides support in a mentoring role to other team members, as appropriate.

Critical Competencies:
• Sales and Marketing: Strong understanding of products and competitive marketplace along with ability to develop/implement successful producer and key account sales/marketing strategies. Proven prospecting skills through effective identification, qualification, quoting and follow up on opportunities. Includes effective use of sales and marketing tools.

Process Management

• Monitor, manage and oversee workload capacity of each team member and adjust as appropriate.
• Ensure staff adherence to all workflows and procedures in compliance with corporate and branch strategies.
• Ensure adherence to underwriting & regulatory procedures, quality and compliance goals.

Service Management
• Ensure all branch service delivery expectations and goals are met.
• Internal – Act as a contact for business partners regarding day to day operations, facilities management, expense management, process management and people management.
• Act as the Service Liaison for identified brokers to research and resolve issues stemming from branch and service centers (underwriting).
• Communicate and collaborate with counterparts in the East Territory branches to ensure service commitments are met, quality products are delivered, and resources are utilized effectively.

Financial Management
• Work with underwriting partners to assist in meeting their business and operational goals.
• Manage monthly premium bookings for departments.
• Use and analysis of various internal reporting systems and tools (CSI Express reporting, MIS, CMR, TSO).
• Manage premium collection results to meet or exceed corporate goals.
• Work with underwriting leaders to manage controllable expenses.
• Ensure timely transfer of eligible business to Underwriting Centers to maximize branch resources.

As an Underwriter in our Life Sciences niche (including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, medical device manufacturing, drug discovery technology and product development organizations), you are accountable for:
• Financial performance of a $7M book of Life Sciences companies with account premiums ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000.
• Achieving profitable growth for the New York City CCI operation within the following lines of business: Products liability, errors & omissions, package, automobile, workers compensation and umbrella for both domestic and international exposures within the Life Sciences industry.
• Soliciting, risk selection and analysis (including documentation), pricing and sales of products and services for new business.
• The position requires frequent travel and marketing to a highly-experienced NYC broker community, including those specializing in the Life Sciences
• Successful market penetration and agency management including: 1) Acting as a key contact to build, maintain and manage customer/producer relationships (including regular agency visits based on business need). 2) Identifying opportunities for growth within new and existing production sources. 3) Performing front door management to filter new business and reinforce appetite. 4) Assist with agency planning and goal setting including monitoring of progress. 5) Identifying cross sell opportunities. 6) Meeting with new and renewal customers, individually or as part of a Chubb team, to make sales presentations and negotiate coverage’s, price, financial terms and service delivery, as necessary. 7) Working in a team environment with other local and regional Underwriters, Loss Control, Claims and Operations. 8) Meeting service standards of a customer focused strategy. 9) Collecting and sharing competitor data with team.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Working knowledge of commercial underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
• Specific knowledge of the Life Sciences industry preferred.
• Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge, including products liability and errors & omissions.
• Proven, successful, sales and marketing skills.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
• Candidate should be familiar with developing marketing plans and handling large, complex accounts.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of underwriting experience
