Director of Garage- Underwriting

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for setting, monitoring, achieving, and measuring the established goals for the for the region, channel or programs. Develops and implements regions, channels or programs strategic plans and objectives. Influences relationships with general agents, brokers, program managers and other customers.
Analyzes, develops, and monitor expense budget. Accountable for underwriting guidelines, rates, forms and procedures across regions or within territory. Monitors and approves the preparation of rates and forms filings and authorizes the use of such rates and forms. Influences relationships with general agents, brokers, and other customers. Approves accounts, which exceed underwriting staffs authority either due to level of complexity, premium, class of business or coverage provided. Responsible for established profitability and return on equity goals.
NOTE: Associates in this job classification may focus on either managing the regional underwriting operations or the brokerage underwriting operations for any of the Excess and Surplus lines.
RELATIONSHIP:Reports to Regional Vice President. Number of direct reports to this position varies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops and implements strategic underwriting plans. Provides business forecasting related to trends, and profitability within region/channel.
2. Directs the development, implementation and monitoring of underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, product endorsements and procedures. Monitors and approves the preparation of rates, forms, and endorsement filings and authorizes the use of such rates, forms, and endorsements.
3. Directs the general agency, brokerage, program relationships, and recommends corrective action if necessary. Conducts regular visits with general agents/brokerage to understand business needs and to identify new business opportunities.
4. Approves accounts which exceed underwriting staffs authority due to level of complexity, premium, class of business or coverage provided.
5. Maintains composition of designated book of business to achieve favorable results. Monitors performance and provides report card on regional/channel/program results. Takes action based on results as needed.
6. Administers and participates in discussions with re-insurers per department guidelines verifying the appropriate use of all reinsurance facilities used by the department, including various treaty, semiautomatic and facultative reinsurance. Maintains good working relationship with re-insurers.
7. Interacts with all departments of the company to achieve company goals and objectives.
8. Communicates regional and/or brokerage initiatives and goals. Builds alignment within territory teams within the region and across the regions.
9. Directs associate management including: performance management,salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions.
10.Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate degree and completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW or ASLI is preferred.
Experience:A minimum of ten years underwriting experience required including five years management experience, excess and surplus lines experience desired.
Knowledge: Knowledge of complex underwriting policies, practices and procedures, insurance law and underwriting marketing principles and techniques.Knowledge of standard bureau rating plans and concepts.Knowledge of alternative rating methods and plans and pricing theory.Knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance.Knowledge of regulatory issues, the general agency system, market conditions and company operations.Knowledge of employment principles and practices.
Skills/Competencies: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with individuals and groups via telephone, fax, e-mail and in person.Demonstrates advanced negotiation skills.Ability to direct a highly technical staff.Ability to work with the wholesale/general agency/brokerage distribution system.Ability to analyze highly complex insurance risks to determine acceptability including policy language, various commercial and alternative rating plans and methodologies, reinsurance.Ability to use/learn job related software.Ability to devise business solutions to complex problems, implement the most appropriate and monitor effectiveness. Ability to make decisions on highly complex issues and work with minimal direction. Ability to coach, train and mentor managers and underwriting personnel. Ability to analyze and interpret mathematical, statistical and logical data and evaluate its reliability and significance.
