SD Director, Recovery/SIU

JOB SUMMARY:
Directs the recovery and collection efforts of the Contribution/Salvage/Subrogation Unit and the Deductible/SIR Unit to achieve maximum return to the Company. Manages the company's internal special investigation unit. . Develops annual and long-term SIU operating plan including policies and procedures for the detection and investigation of fraudulent claims. Acts as company liaison to entities that fight insurance fraud. Assesses staffing needs, the appropriate distribution of work, and the administration of salary and performance reviews in accordance with Company guidelines.
RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Officer, Claims Specialty Services. Directly manages about 6 claims subrogation and investigations associates including recovery managers and special investigations managers. Indirectly manages about 35 claims associates.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensures that efficient recovery and collection techniques are utilized by the staff in accordance with Company procedures, policies, and consumer legislation.
2. Manages company?s internal SIU and develops annual and long-term SIU operation plan including policies and procedures.
3. Reviews and provides authority on files in excess of staff's authority. Provides direction and guidance on the negotiation and settlement process.
4. Administers and directs the quality assurance program for the Recovery Department to ensure the thorough and consistent application of Company procedures and policies.
5. Promotes and coordinates fraud training and education for SIU and other claims personnel.
6. Ensures company compliance with fraud-related state laws and insurance codes and measures and reports success of fraud program.
7. Monitors and controls quality and cost of expert resources.
8. Maintains diary on pending SIU files and performs periodic file reviews.
9. Continually develops subordinate staff to achieve optimum performance in present positions and prepare for future needs. Hires, trains, coaches, and appraises staff; recommends salary increases, promotions, performance evaluations or disciplinary actions as appropriate, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or non-disqualifying handicap/disability.
10. Develops and recommends department budget.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Undergraduate degree in Insurance, or closely related field preferred. Completion of general insurance courses such as IIA and/or CPCU preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of ten years experience with exposure to all aspects of the multi-line insurance claims operations including collections and investigations. A minimum of 3 years management experience and experience as a fraud investigator required.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of collection and negotiation techniques; State Insurance Department regulations regarding special investigations, unfair claim handling regulations; and laws involving all aspects of recovery, collection, and investigations.
Skills/Competencies:
Ability to communicate interpersonally with individuals and groups, via the telephone and in writing. Overall professional attitude and communication skills utilized with agents and other individuals in the insurance community, law enforcement agencies, and insurance department personnel. Knowledge of state insurance department regulations, unfair claim handling regulations, and laws involving all aspects of multi-line coverage, liability, and damages; ability to apply accepted management principles and techniques; experience in the management of SIU operations.
