Full-time Marine Surveyor

Position Summary:
Investigate the nature and extent of cargo damage or loss and establishes possible cause; assist claimants in mitigating the loss; prepare factual survey reports and make recommendations for preventing future losses.

Responsibilities:
Upon receipt of assignment, determine origin of client’s involvement, i.e., cargo insurer, P&I interest, liability or some other contractor.
Before proceeding, ensure that claimants have held all parties responsible.
If other surveyors have also been appointed, attempt to arrange a joint survey if local jurisdictional requirements permit.
When conducting joint surveys, attempt to reach agreement on quantum and cause of loss in a mariner protecting interests of client represented.
When surveying losses involving damaged commodities outside area of expertise, appoint outside expert to assist if client agrees.
Notify claimant if loss appears to be due to a manufacturing defect or is of pre- shipment origin.
Endeavor to obtain factual information relating to transportation of cargo to assist in reaching conclusion as to when and where damage took place.
Determine the most equitable method for establishing extent of loss and/or depreciation of goods.
If goods are to be sold at salvage, seek written bids from potential buyers and then submit to represented party/parties. Introduce the high bidder to the claimant so that they may consummate the sale.
Prepare detailed report showing nature and extent of damage, damage points, probable cause and estimated depreciation.
Make recommendations in report to claimant regarding improvements in methods of packaging, storage and securing, transportation or warehousing in order to mitigate future losses.
Perform sampling of damaged cargo for further analysis and documentation if circumstances dictate.
Uphold the Crawford Code of Business Conduct at all times.
Participate in special projects or perform other duties as requested.

Requirements:
Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum five (5) years experience as a Marine Surveyor attending to the above cited duties in the field without benefit of supervision
Travel is required
Thorough knowledge of insurance terminology, practices and coverages
Good understanding of proper packaging for protection of shipped commodities
Good understanding of stowage requirements and options
Understanding of continuations and over-the-road transportation security measures and trailer types
Ability to assess suitability and security of warehouses as well as potential fire and water hazards

Preferred:
