Summary of Job Responsibilities:
Manages a field Special Investigation Unit providing guidance and direction for Special Investigators. Facilitates and supports loss control objectives and excellence in claims performance. Assists in the development of and coordinates SIU fraud control objectives; supports the Claims Department by providing expert investigative services and consultation; ensures that the Claims Department is provided with a timely, quality investigative product to make appropriate decisions involving fraud issues. Makes one-on-one observations for performance assessment needed to achieve investigative excellence, all at the discretion and direction of the SIU Director.
The following duties cover what are generally believed to be principal and essential functions of the job. Specific circumstances may allow or require some people assigned to the job to perform a somewhat different combination of duties.
1. Reviews, routes and assigns all SIU referrals for the most effective file handling. Ensures that assigned cases are investigated and reported back to the Claims Manager within prescribed time allotment.
2. Provides training and technical direction for Investigators; assists the SIU Director in the identification of training needs and provides coaching/counseling through one-on-one observation and review of files. Assists the SIU Director in developing programs to improve skill levels. Performs and/or assists with other types of training activities as requested.
3. Communicates results of the Special Investigation Unit via newsletter or other means to recognize the efforts of our customers.
4. Assists the SIU Director in the development and conduct of fraud awareness training programs; determines patterns of fraud and actions required to deter it. Provides input to SIU Director regarding investigation and file handling.
5. Provides administrative assistance as required to the SIU Director.
6. Fosters and maintains positive relationships with representatives of the Enterprise core functions, policyholders, law enforcement, and the general public.
7. Responsible for and maintains the database system; monitors and analyzes operating results within the assigned territory and reports results to the SIU Director.
8. Participates in multi-functional task teams as assigned.
9. Manages the hiring, supervising, training, and promoting of candidates regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, or disability in support of Nationwide’s Affirmative Action Program.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary of Job Requirements:
Education:
Undergraduate studies in insurance, criminal justice, law, medicine or business. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Fraud Claim Law Specialist or Certified Insurance Fraud Investigator designation highly desirable. Specialized training in insurance fraud detection and prevention preferred.
Experience:
Eight years combined SIU, legal, claims, or law enforcement experience. Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of the insurance industry, Special Investigation Unit operations, claims handling and payment operations, and insurance contracts.
- Knowledge of legal issues and litigation process. State and federal civil and criminal law.
- SIU operations and Best Practices.
- Insurance fraud investigation techniques.
- Unfair Claims Practices Act, Legislative and Insurance Department regulatory requirements.
Skills:
- Superior oral and written communication skills used to interact with all levels of internal customers, governmental investigative/prosecutorial agencies, trade groups and the general public.
- Ability to interact with others in one-on-one situations to identify issues/problems and provide training/coaching to correct problem areas.
- Computer literacy and use of applicable software.
- Ability to be flexible and prioritize multiple tasks.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Normal office environment with possibility of residence-based work. Travel required. May be exposed to potentially hazardous situations.
