Full-time Claim Director

JOB SUMMARY:
Provides direction, leadership and guidance in the organization. Establishes policies and procedures for the line operation department (property, general liability, transportation, professional liability). Develops and implements departmental strategic plans and objectives. Communicates and drives claims performance to achieve individual and team operational results, including customer service, indemnity and expense outcome and strategic alignment with Division goals and objectives. Responsible for the development, coaching, mentoring, and training of subordinates and ensures consistent and effective communication with claims personnel.

LOCATION: Claims/Property, Transportation, GL, and PL
RELATIONSHIP: Reports to AVP or VP, Claims. DIRECT REPORTS: 35-55

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for the overall management and operation of the Department to include: tactical and strategic planning; annual budget preparation and monitoring; projecting human resource and customer needs; hiring, motivating, promoting, developing and perfromance management of staff regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, age or non-disqualifying handicap/disability.
2. Creates a working environment which fosters the achievement of the highest level of technical competency and professionalism with the staff.
3. Manages and measures individual performance and department operational results, including customer service, indemnity and expense outcome and strategic alignment with Division goals and objectives.
4. Maintains contact with external customers which involves maintaining, developing and influencing relationships with major customers or key individuals.
5. Requires a strong knowledge of technical claims operations, procedures and claims performance strategies, day-to-day claims operations. Also requires working knowledge of cross-functional initiatives. Prefer familiarity with other specialties.
6. Demonstrates decision-making skills, including the ability to recognize, analyze and improve claims performance, employee development and morale.
7. Responsible for managing the claims processes consistently within a technical specialty. Coordinates efforts with other specialty claims functions such as Claims Legal, Recovery, CQR, SIU, and claims staff support.
8. Directs the responses to customer complaints; communicates complaint trends and creates action plans to address ccustomer service issues. Promotes an environment to achieve optimal customer satisfaction.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary of Job Requirements:

Education/Knowledge:
Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree preferred. Equivalent experience or professional designation will be considered in lieu of degree. With or without reasonable accommodation: multi-line, multi-jurisdictional, and E&S experience is helpful; knowledge of the General Agency system, state insurance department regulation, unfair claim handling regulations, and a good understanding of tort law.

Experience:
Typically, a minimum of ten years claims experience required including five years in claims management.
Requires multi-line experiemce with exposure to the general agency system.

Skills:
With or without reasonable accommodation: the ability to effectively communicate interpersonally with individuals and groups. Effective listening ,oral and written communication skills necessary for customer contact, negotiation, presentations, project management, personnel management, technical and nontechnical contacts preferred.
